OUR STORY
In 1942, a woman named Mrs. Christine Nelson settled in the city of Norwalk, after immigrating from Sweden in the late 1800s. Mrs. Nelson had 3 children and 13 grandchildren, one of them being Mrs. Marie Schumaker. In 1952, Mrs. Marie Schumaker had a desire to impact the children living in her community and as a result of this, she started a Sunday school for these children to learn about Jesus.
As surrounding communities began to catch the vision for this Sunday School, a group of people began to gather together to pray and on November 15, 1953, the structure that is now known as “Redeemer Covenant Church” was dedicated. In the early days, the church consisted of fifty-three members united to form the Charter Membership of Norwalk Covenant Church. These people were committed to serving the Lord, to prayer and to youth and families. Although much has changed since those early days of the church that became “Redeemer Covenant Church” in Downey, these identity markers still stand.
We are still a group of people who are committed to serving the Lord here on this street corner and in our community. We are still a group of people who are devoted to prayer and worshiping our Creator. We are still a group of people who are committed to the youth and families in our community.
At the junction of Norwalk, Santa Fe Springs and Downey stands “Redeemer Covenant Church”, a multi-generational church. A part of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Redeemer Covenant Church is committed to helping its community find and follow Jesus. Stop by on a Sunday and introduce yourself. We would love to meet you!
